Iyengar Yoga Class

Iyengar yoga

Iyengar yoga is the style taught at many of our Level 1 & 2 classes.
Goal: To move your yoga practice to Level 2 & 3 (Improver & Intermediate) by exploring new poses

Iyengar Yoga with Senior qualified teacher Annette Cahill. For improving students.

What you will achieve:
This class is aimed at those students who have some experience of Iyengar yoga (not beginners) and wish to explore the method in more detail. The work will be progressive.

Standing poses.
Covered at the start of every class to some level, standing poses form the foundation for all other asanas as they include all spinal movements: flexion, extension and rotation.

Standing forward bends.
Forward extensions help develop the outer muscles of the spinal column which in turn will help students with the inversions.

Twists & Inversions.
Twists (which build up the lateral muscles) and inversions such as Halasana, Salamba Sarvangasana and Ekapada Sarvangasana will be covered. Inversions such as Halasana teach us to balance and bear the weight of the body on the shoulders, bringing freedom to the neck area and preparing the way for Salamba Sarvangasana and Ekapada Sarvangasana.

Preparatory backward extensions.
Poses such as Adho Mukha Svanasa, Chaturanga Dandasana, Urdhva Mukha Svanasana. They form the foundation for the more difficult back bends.

Additional backwards extensions.
These will include asanas such as Salabhasana, Bujangasana and Dhanurasana will be covered.

One week is dedicated to the teaching of restorative asanas, which are based on passive extensions to help recovery and recuperation. A brief introduction to pranayama will be included. (Ujjayi Pranayama I and II).

'This class allows students to gain a better understanding of the workings of the body and the importance of sequencing and alignment. Working in this progressive manner (from the simplest to the more complex poses) will help students develop their own practice and will help prepare for the practice of some of the most beneficial of the poses, the inversions. Such poses as Halasana, Salamba Sarvangasana, and on to arm balance, elbow balance and head balance'.
